ST's Multimedia SoC software stack meets GENIVI spec

STMicroelectronics recently revealed that the software stack for its STiH416 multimedia system-on-chip is now compliant with the GENIVI Alliance's specifications. In complying with GENIVI Alliance's specifications, the STiH416 can now be used for automotive infotainment systems.

With the proof that the STiH416 is suited as host for GENIVI-compliant IVI SDK software stack, ST drives its roadmap further into the production of a completely automotive-qualified family of SoC products. The SoC can be used by IVI designers to implement applications which feature innovative functionalities and user interfaces.

The GENIVI platform bundles software modules that comply with its specs to a middleware layer. The functionality of this layer includes telephony, audio, data routing, or Bluetooth connectivity and provides interfaces to connect sensors, cameras, and operating elements. The GENIVI concept is based on open-source software for operation under the Linux operating system; the alliance selects software elements it assesses as suitable for sophisticated in-vehicle infotainment (IVI) applications. This enables tier ones and OEMs to cost-effectively manufacture IVI systems and speeds time-to-market for new products.

"The GENIVI specification set, which is evolving rapidly, will ensure that IVI systems can be designed and brought to market swiftly and that they can cover a broad range of applications", said Marco Carilli, Director of Software & Applications, IVI Business unit at ST's Digital Convergence Group. The software stack enables the design of multi-screen systems and advanced driver assistance systems.

The STiH416 is an advanced HD AVC processor and graphics accelerator that supports high-resolution video based on the H.264, VC-1, AVS and MPEG-2 standards. It contains an ARM Cortex application processor, a multimedia engine, a quad-core graphics processor and an audio DSP along with peripheral circuitry to implement connectivity functions including Ethernet, HDMI and USB2.0 interfaces.
