Epson crystal oscillators claim record-low jitter

New low-jitter programmable voltage-controlled crystal oscillators (VCXO) from Seiko Epson operate at only 70mA at 3.3V and exhibit jitter of 0.27ps at 622.08MHz, the lowest rates among VCXOs to date. Programmable over 50MHz to 800MHz, the VG7050EAN and VG7050ECN "Any-Rate" VCXOs are factory designed for frequency as well as absolute pull range (APR).

Epson created the new low-jitter low-power programmable VCXOs to enable optical transmission equipment to support multiple protocols and line rates with a single oscillator. The products are made from the company's proprietary high-frequency fundamental (HFF) crystal that can oscillate at a fundamental frequency over 100MHz with a low-jitter fractional-n PLL IC. As a result, Epson's VG7050EAN and VG7050ECN achieve the world's lowest jitter (0.27ps) of any programmable VCXO at both SONET (622.08MHz) and Ethernet (156.25MHz) frequencies.

Default settings of the VG7050EAN and VG7050ECN can be overwritten using an I2C bus so users can program any output frequency and APR they require. To simplify multi-protocol designs, the VG7050ECN allows four frequencies to be pin-selectable.
