ST's 32bit MCUs incorporate 512KB flash

STMicroelectronics has released the latest addition to its series of STM32 L1 ultra-low-power ARM Cortex-M3 32bit MCUs with 512KB flash devices. According to the company, the L1 series now includes more than 70 part numbers in three lines that offer the combination of ultra-low power consumption and memory size up to 512KB of Flash and 80KB of RAM.

Offering low-power operation in ST's own ultra-low-leakage 110nm CMOS process and optimised architecture, the devices target cost-efficient embedded designs in connected and battery-operated applications in fitness, healthcare, wearable and industrial/metering domains, noted ST.

The L1 series features an ARM Cortex-M3 32bit core with up to 33DMIPS operating at 32MHz, and is pin-to-pin and software compatible with all previous STM32 L1 devices. It also boasts run-mode dynamic power consumption 257uA/MHz at 32MHz down to 177uA/MHz at 4MHz. In addition, the series offers two ultra-low-power modes down to 435nA with SRAM retention; true embedded EEPROM; and dual-bank flash allowing fast and fail-safe firmware updates and rollback due to the Read-While-Write (RWW) capabilities.

These devices have voltage scaling, a flexible clock tree with low-power multi-speed internal (MSI) oscillator, and an operating temperature range of -40°C to 85°C or up to 105°C in low-power modes, while ST's 110nm process technology offers the industry's smallest variation in power consumption between 25°C and 105°C.

The STM32 L1 512 kB is supported by an STM32 Nucleo extension board. These prototyping boards are mbed-enabled and support Arduino connectivity while also providing ST Morpho extension headers that allow access to all of the microcontroller's on-chip peripherals, detailed the firm.

The STM32L151, STM32L152 and STM32L162 lines are priced from $3.95 (for 512KB devices) (10,000).
