Microchip's motor controllers improve noise immunity

Microchip rolled out a family of 16bit digital signal controllers (DSCs) for motor control in harsh electrical environments. Targeting industrial, automotive and appliance applications, the devices operate on a 5V supply to improve noise immunity and robustness. The dsPIC33EV family also includes safety-critical features such as error correction coding (ECC) on internal Flash memory, windowed watchdog timers and dead man timers as well as a backup oscillator.

The dsPIC33EV family provides a mix of peripherals that specifically target motor control. In addition to six motor control PWMs, there are op-amps, analogue comparators, a charge-time measure unit and 36 channels of 12bit ADC. The DSP core on chip runs motor control algorithms at up to 70 MIPs, has four DMA channels and provides ECC capable of 1bit correction and 2bit error detection. Devices are rated for operation up to 150°C.

The family provides developers with a selection of high-performance serial interfaces, including CAN, SENT and UART with LIN. Both I2C and SPI interfaces are also available. All interfaces operate at 5V to simplify connection to precision sensors.

Microchip is supporting the new family with libraries of certified Class B motor control software and for implementing capacitive touch control, MATLAB and Simulink blocks for simulation and code generation, and hardware development kits. In addition to a dsPIC33EV processor module for the existing low-voltage motor control development bundle, the company is offering a 5V CAN/LIN starter kit.
