Handheld tool probes fibre connections via Android

Proper alignment within fibre-optic cables is important in maximising the light flow from fibres to connectors. To enable easy detection of the fibre optic alignment, EXFO introduced FIP-435B fibre-inspection probe using an Android tablet or smartphone, which provides the user a visual of the connection and detects if it adheres to industry standards.

The fibre-inspection probe can automatically detect the connection, locate and centre the fibre image, adjust and optimise the focus and capture, run pass/fail analysis based on standards, then save and report the results. Note the light on the probe, which indicates if a connection meets the selected industry standard. Thus, you can tell if the connection passes without the need for a remote screen.

Using the ConnectorMax2 Android app, you can connect the FIP-435B to an Android device over Wi-Fi. That provides a distance advantage over Bluetooth, letting technicians climb antenna towers and check connections while someone on the ground can see the results.

In addition, the FIP-435B can store images and download them to the Android device for archiving. Plus, the Android app can connect to the Internet using a 3G, 4G, or Wi-Fi connection and connect to a remote database for storing test data. The fibre-inspection probe has a rechargeable battery that can last all day, meaning technicians need to have to recharge it once on the road.
