Also at the IPSO booth, engineers Brett Warneke and Thomas Watteyne showed off HeadsUp!, an Internet-enabled accelerometer that monitors the position of a patient's head during recovery from retinal detachment surgery. The technology fulfils an important need for such patients, who are required to keep their heads in the same position for as long as three weeks after surgery.

HeadsUp! accomplishes that by combining the sensor with low-power wireless networking technology that enables position data to be reported to the cloud. Patients receive an alert when their head deviates too much and surgeons can use the technology to track patients' progress.
