Handheld laser source pinpoints fibre faults

GAO Instruments, an international provider of test and measurement instruments for electronic product design, has recently unveiled the Model C0280003 handheld laser source. The company's latest product emits a visible red light at a wavelength of 650nm to identify the location of fibre macrobends, breaks, problem connectors and improperly aligned mechanical splices.

The handheld laser works with both single-mode and multi-mode optical fibre and can be used within an OTDR's dead zone where accurate readings would otherwise be unavailable.

The laser source produces an optical power output of ≥0.5 mW, while offering a choice of two operating modes: continuous wave and 2Hz modulated. Powered by a 9-V NiMH rechargeable battery, the Model C0280003 delivers 8 to 10 hours of continuous operation. Other features include a low-voltage warning and an automatic power-off function.
