Texas Instruments Inc. (TI) has recently announced their MSP430F521x/F522x MCU family. TI's latest line of MCUs feature a main supply rail (1.8V – 3.6V) and I/O supply rail (1.8 ± 10 per cent). The dual-rail capability is designed to reduce power requirements for co-processor designs, allowing for a seamless interface to other devices which have a nominal 1.8V I/O interface without the need for external translation.

MSP430F522x MCUs are available in configurations with four 16bit timers, a high-performance 10bit ADC (analogue-to-digital converter), two USCIs (universal serial communication interfaces), hardware multiplier, DMA, comparator, and real-time clock module with alarm capabilities. The MSP430F521x series include all the peripherals of the MSP430F522x series with the exception of the ADC.

Figure 1: The TI MSP430F521x/F522x MCU family dual rail capability eliminates the need for external level translation for other devices that have a nominal 1.8-V I/O interface.

The new devices can serve as a bridge between application processors and other technologies including sensors, keyboards, RF, BLE (Bluetooth low energy), and Wi-Fi—offloading the application processor and eliminating the need for expensive level shifting circuits to translate 1.8V signals to 3.6V signals, saving size, cost and power. In this role, the F521x/F522x MCUs can serve as low-power co-processors to processors with higher power/performance capabilities such as TI's OMAP and Sitara processors.

MSP430F521x/F522x MCUs are compatible with MSP430Ware software and code compatible with all MSP430 devices for broader scalability across TI's MSP portfolio. TI offers the MCUs in multiple package sizes including 48- and 64-pin QFN, 80-pin BGA options with up to 128k memory, and a 3.5mmx3.5mm YFF package (available in 1Q13). MSP430F521x/F522x MCUs are priced from $2.05 for 1K units and samples are immediately available.
