PMIC tooled for Intel's Bay Trail platform for tablets

In support of Intel's latest Atom system-on-chip (code-named Bay Trail), Rohm has developed a dedicated system power-management IC (PMIC ). Bay Trail is a quad-core processor which has double the computing performance of Intel's current-generation offering for tablet computers. Like Intel's latest platform, Rohm's PMIC target ultra-thin tablets and tablet convertibles.

Scheduled for a holiday 2013 release, the Bay Trail platform is already up and running on Windows and Android, helping enable new experiences in designs as thin as 8mm that will have all-day battery life and weeks of standby.

According to Stephen L. Smith, Intel VP and director of tablet platform development, "Intel is happy to collaborate with Rohm as one of our ecosystem suppliers to offer a competitive power-management solution for our next-generation Intel Atom platform. Rohm provides a valuable capability in developing and bringing to market energy-efficient power-delivery ICs critical for Intel's next-generation Atom-based tablets."

Dr. Takahisa Yamaha, managing director and head of Rohm Semiconductor Division, added, "Our PMIC represents more than just a successful IC design. It represents a strong collaboration with Intel's Mobile and Communications Group that is allowing Intel to release a cutting-edge tablet SoC platform. Customers will enjoy the benefit of a fully integrated PMIC, which delivers improved battery life and higher integration. Intel's most advanced process technology delivers the highest performance with the lowest power consumption in the tablet market."
