ISORG, Plastic Logic demo organic image sensor on plastic

ISORG and Plastic Logic have co-developed what they claim as the industry's first conformable organic image sensor on plastic. The device can significantly improve weight/power trade-offs and optical design parameters for any system with a digital imaging element.

The device combines ISORG's organic photodetectors (OPD) with Plastic Logic's organic thin-film transistor (OTFT) backplane. In the past, OTFT backplanes have been used to make flexible displays for e-readers, but the technology can now be applied to perform pixel readout in a large area image sensor.

At this week's Printed Electronics USA, the companies will demonstrate image scanning with a plastic image sensor with an active area measuring 40x40mm and featuring 96x96 pixels (over 9,000 pixels with a 375um pitch).

The demonstration will show how the famous Mona Lisa portrait can be scanned without a photographic lens, by placing the picture directly on the large area sensor. Visitors will also be invited to create their own images.

Although the proof-of-concept device has a relatively low resolution, it demonstrates how two printed electronics components can be combined to create new products. ISORG and Plastic Logic are now working on reducing the pixel pitch.
