Sensor allows smartphones to measure humidity, temperature

Bosch Sensortec has merged pressure, humidity and temperature measurement capabilities into a single MEMS sensor that can be used in smartphones and wearable devices for sports and fitness. Ideal for battery-driven applications, the BME280 Integrated Environmental Unit is available in a 0.93mm high 8-pin LGA package measuring 2.5mm x 2.5mm.

The humidity sensor within the BME280 measures relative humidity from 0 to 100 per cent across a temperature range from -40°C to +85°C with a response time of less than 1 second. The humidity measurement accuracy is ±3 per cent with a hysteresis of 2 per cent or better, and the temperature reading accuracy is within 0.5°C. The current consumption of only 3.6µA (at 1Hz) makes the BME280 Integrated Environmental Unit particularly suitable for battery-driven applications. The relative accuracy of pressure readings is ±0.12 hPA, which equates to ±1m of altitude difference at a resolution of 1.5cm.

The device comes with I2C and SPI serial digital outputs. Bosch Sensortec also provides support software. The BSH1.0 algorithm enables developers to implement a temperature compensation function.

The BME280 samples for development customers are available now.
