Aitech Defence Systems has introduced 6U VPX (C670), 3U VPX (C680) and XMC (M620) versions of its managed Gigabit Ethernet switches for use in harsh environments, including military, industrial and rugged applications. The new formats are capable of Layer 2 and Layer 3 switching thanks to the Marvell Prestera 98DX4122 multi-layer switch packet controller.

Each managed switch product supports the same protocols and network services, in addition to a simplified HTML browser-based interface. The switches feature a host of board management devices such as power controller, elapsed time recorder and temperature sensors as well as several monitoring devices including CPU, port and TCAM utilisation.

Like Aitech's original C660 6U cPCI GigE switch, the 6U VPX (C670) and 3U VPX (C680) have up to 24GbE ports. The C670 is perhaps the most similar version to the C660, having 24 x 10/100/1000Base-T ports, eight of which can be 1000Base-X SERDES ports. Both products also have 24 x 10/100Base-TX Fast Ethernet ports, four 10GbE XAUI ports and are expandable to 40 total GbE ports with the M620 XMC.

The C680 3U VPX has 12 x 10/100/1000Base-T ports, 24 x 1000Base-BX/KX SERDES ports, 24 x 10/100Base-TX Fast Ethernet ports and two 10GbE ports.

The M620 features up to 16 Fast/Gigabit Ethernet ports in three standard configurations. Aside from 8 x 10/100/1000Base-T ports, this format has 16 x 1000Base-BX/KX SERDES ports, 16 x 10/100Base-TX Fast Ethernet ports and two 10GbE XAUI ports that are VITA 42.6 compliant.

Features of each port include auto-negotiation and auto MDI/MDIX support as well as head of line (HOL) blocking prevention. VLAN and port mirroring are also included.

All the switches incorporate an integrated low power ARM-compatible Sheeva CPU core. Operating at 800MHz, the CPU core functions as a service processor and interfaces to a high speed DDRII-320MHz memory controller. They are available in five 100 per cent software compatible environmental build-grades: air-cooled commercial, air-cooled rugged, conduction-cooled rugged, full military air-cooled and full military conduction-cooled grade.
