Intersil delivers radiation-hardened POL regulator

Optimising thermal management for aerospace and satellite applications, the ISL70003SEH point-of-load (POL) buck regulator from Intersil operates over an input range of 3V to 13.2V, while providing both radiation and single-event-effects (SEE) hardening. A synchronous rectification topology allows for seamless switching between the chip's integrated upper and lower switching MOSFETs, delivering peak efficiency of up to 95 per cent.

The device furnishes a tightly regulated output voltage that is externally adjustable from 0.6V to ~90 per cent of the input voltage. Continuous output load current is 6A at a junction temperature of +125°C and 3A for a junction temperature of +150°C. The regulator uses a voltage-mode control architecture with feed-forward and switches at a selectable frequency of 500kHz or 300kHz.

The ISL70003SEH achieves the ±5 per cent voltage accuracy required by FPGAs, ASICs, microprocessors and microcontrollers in space applications. It also provides ±1 per cent reference voltage variation over line, temperature and radiation.

In addition, the switching regulator's 14.7V absolute maximum rating in the heavy ion environment at a linear energy transfer of 86MeVcm2/mg provides an adequate derating margin for 12V applications, which improves system reliability.
