RFID ambient light detector detects exposure to light

Farsens S.L. has introduced the SHADOW that according to the company is a battery free RFID ambient light detector tag compatible with commercial EPC C1G2 readers. It boasts an LPRS N5AC501085 light dependent resistor (LDR) to detect exposure to light or darkness.

With a 96bit EPC number, a 32bit TID and a password protected Kill command, the tag is built in a PCB format available in different sizes. The communication range is up to 1.5m and the tag operates in the -30°C to 85°C temperature range.


The ambient light detector tags can be embedded in a variety of materials such as plastics or concrete and they can also be encapsulated in an IP67 or IP68 casing for usage in harsh environments. Monitoring light exposure allows the user to program a variety of procedures based on process time/status and the detector data. Such tags are usually embedded in sealed places where exposure to light is scarce. Hence, light exposure becomes an indicator to act upon.
