MLCCs target RF devices, telecom, medical, military apps

Vishay Intertechnology Inc. has released its QUAD HIFREQ series of high-power surface-mount multilayer ceramic chip capacitors (MLCCs) with enhanced capabilities. Aimed at high-frequency RF applications in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) coils and generators, RF instrumentation, telecom base stations, lasers and military communications systems, the devices boast extended capacitance range down to 0.1pF in the 0505 case size and 0.2pF in the 1111 case size; tighter capacitance tolerance down to ±0.05 pF (code "V"); and non-magnetic copper terminations (code "C"), detailed the company.

Based on an extremely stable ceramic dielectric and offering high serial resonant frequency (SRF) and parallel resonant frequency (PRF), the enhanced Vishay Vitramon MLCCs are designed to provide reliable performance in critical applications such as UHF and microwave RF power amplifiers, filter and impedance matching networks, timing circuits, mixers and oscillators.


Manufactured in noble metal electrode (NME) technology with a wet build process, the QUAD HIFREQ series features a working voltage range from 200V to 7.2kV and a capacitance range from 0.1-5100pF in the quad 0505, 1111, 2525 and 3838 case sizes. The devices claim to offer an excellent aging rate of zero per cent per decade and an operating temperature range of 55°C to 125°C, Vishay added.

In addition to the non-magnetic copper terminations, which provide improved solder fillet characteristics for reflow soldering assembly, the capacitors are available with RoHS-compliant nickel barrier terminations with 100 per cent matte tin plate for reflow assembly (code "X"), and with a lead-bearing (minimum four per cent) termination finish (code "L"). The Vishay Green devices are halogen-free.

Samples and production quantities of the QUAD HIFREQ MLCCs are available with a lead time of nine weeks for larger orders.
