Winner: VirtualBench, National Instruments

VirtualBench is an all-in-one instrument that integrates a mixed-signal oscilloscope, function generator, digital multi-metre, programmable DC power supply and digital I/O. Users interact with VirtualBench through software applications that run on PCs or iPads. The device provides the most common functionality affordably and opens up new possibilities for how engineers can use benchtop instruments.

Because VirtualBench uses today's consumer computing platforms, engineers and scientists can take advantage of the latest technologies like multi-touch displays, multi-core processors, wireless connectivity and intuitive interfaces. Additionally, the simplification and increased capability through software leads to more efficient circuit debugging and validation.

Other key benefits include taking up minimal space on a desktop or benchtop; simplified instrument configuration through consistent, user-friendly interfaces; increased convenience and added capability with the consolidated view of multiple instruments; and seamless integration with LabVIEW system design software. Since the device combines five instruments into one form factor, VirtualBench eliminates the need for duplicate components such as display screens, knobs and buttons. This allowed NI to deliver the product at the affordable cost of $1,999.
