Cypress controller targets USB 3.1 cables, cable adapters

Cypress Semiconductor Corp. introduced its second-generation, ultra-small footprint, programmable USB Type-C cable controller solution, which is the first to integrate both the Type-C transceiver and termination resistors.

Targeting electronically marked cables and cable adapters, the one-chip EZ-PD CCG2 controller has an ultra-small footprint and 100W power delivery (PD) capability. It is optimised for 2.4mm-thin USB 3.1 Type-C cable connectors and can fully support any USB Type-C downstream or upstream facing port applications.

Cypress claims the Type-C cable controller is gaining support from top-tier PC makers with its slim design, easy-to-use connectors and cables, multiple protocol transmission feature and 10W PD capability, which is an upgrade over the previous 7.5W standard.

However, the product requires an electronically marked cable assembly (EMCA) that can report the cable's supported characteristics, such as current carrying capability, protocols and others. The Cypress Type-C controllers also simplify EMCA implementation and reduce BOM by requiring only five or fewer external components.

"Cypress's CCG1 controllers opened up the path for quick adoption of USB Type-C for our top-tier customers, bringing the standard's easy plug-and-play ability, multi-protocol connectivity, and power delivery to market," said Ajay Srikrishna, vice president of the USB product line at Cypress. "Now, with our second-generation EZ-PD CCG2 Type-C controller's unmatched levels of integration in a tiny footprint package, we have an optimised, programmable solution for electronically-marked cables and cable adapters."

The controller integrates an ARM Cortex-M0 core and 32KB Flash. Its firmware can also be upgraded to comply with future USB-IF specification changes. Available in 20-ball wafer level chip scale and 14-pin DFN packages, the CYPD21XX CCG2 Type-C Cable controller family is set for production in June.
