Short range radio

A recent Renesas and imec introduction of an ultra-low power multi-standard 2.4GHz short range radio which is also compliant with Bluetooth Low Energy (BTLE) and ZigBee manufactured in 40nm CMOS. The world-class energy efficiency of this radio IC uses a digital-intensive RF architecture integrated with the digital base band (DBB) and a microcontroller (MCU). Sub-1V operation is achieved, allowing a power consumption of only 3.7mW at RX and 4.4mW at TX. The analogue core is 1.3mm2 and the DBB/MCU/SRAM area is 1.1mm2.

Impuse Radio

Imec's Impuse Radio Ultra-Wideband (IR-UWB) operates between 6GHz and 9GHz with worldwide available channels and is compliant with IEEE802.15.4a. Its pulse-based communication data rates are from 110kbps to 27Mbit/s. Applications include hearing aids, accurate localisation, automotive and high quality audio streaming with miniaturised antennas (with proven ear-to-ear communications for hearing aids). A complete IR-UWB demonstrator consists of an RF board, a dual ADC board and a receiver base band FPGA board.
