IO-Link dual transceiver cuts power dissipation by half

Maxim Integrated has introduced the MAX14827 IO-Link dual transceiver with typical driver on-resistance of 2.5Ω, which promises to save more than 50 per cent power dissipation. The compact device combines high-voltage functions commonly found in industrial sensors such as two ultralow-power drivers with active reverse-polarity protection and 3.3V and 5V linear regulators for low-noise analogue/logic supply rails.


According to the company, the transceiver offers both an SPI interface for sensors that use a MCU and a three-wire UART interface for IO-Link operation, which allows interfacing to the MCU UART. A multiplexed UART/SPI option allows using one serial MCU interface for shared SPI and UART interfaces.

Operation of the MAX14827 is specified for conventional 24V supply voltages up to 60V. Driver current is selectable between 50mA and 250mA. Absolute maximum ratings of 65V on the interface and supply pins enables flexible transient voltage surge protection.

The MAX14827 is available in 2.5mm x 2.5mm WLP and 4mm x 4mm TQFN packages for operation over a temperature range of -40°C to 125°C. Prices start at $3.35 in lots of 1000 units. An evaluation kit is also available comprising a fully assembled and tested circuit board with a resident MAX14827 IO-Link transceiver. It operates under pin-mode control or via an SPI interface.
