ON Semi intros image sensor with global shutter, OIS driver

ON Semiconductor has recently made new advances into the imaging area with the introduction of two products—a new automotive imaging sensor with global shutter and a driver for optical image stabilisation in portable electronics, such as smart phones and tablets. These product announcements, among others, were closely timed with two trade shows: Embedded World and the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.

The 1.2Mpixel image sensor, the AR0135AT, has a new global shutter pixel design, with 10X lower dark current and 4X higher shutter efficiency against the company's previous generation products. ON Semiconductor claims that these improvements allow the sensor to produce clear, low-noise images, in both low-light and bright scenes and in high-temperature environments. The global shutter allows the camera to "freeze" fast moving scene data and ensures effective synchronisation with pulsed light sources.

The 1/3-inch format sensor is targeted at automotive imaging, high-speed barcode scanning and emerging applications like virtual reality and 3D depth sensing. This increased performance enables the required eye tracking and gesture detection functionality in the next generation of automotive in-cabin systems and improves the detection speed of barcode scanning systems.

The AR0135AT is a 1280-by-960 pixel resolution device that delivers 54fps at full resolution and 60fps at 720p. It includes a broad set of features to improve overall system control, including dedicated FLASH and Trigger pins to simplify control of external LED light sources and more easily synchronise multiple sensors for stereo camera applications. An on-chip temperature sensor and a statistics engine add to the diagnostic and control capability of the camera system. The AR0135 also provides the flexibility of both parallel and serial (via a four lane HiSPi interface) outputs.

It uses an on-chip, phase-locked loop (PLL) that can be optionally enabled to generate all internal clocks from a single master input clock running between 6MHz and 50MHz. The maximum output pixel rate is 74.25Mp/s, corresponding to a clock rate of 74.25MHz.

The exposure of the entire array is controlled by programming the integration time by register setting. All rows simultaneously integrate light prior to readout. Once a row has been read, the data from the columns is sequenced through an analogue signal chain (providing offset correction and gain), and then through an ADC (see figure 1 above). The output from the ADC is a 12bit value for each pixel in the array.

The AR0135AT meets the AEC-Q100 Grade 2 temperature range of -40°C to 105°C, while the AR0135CS supports the standard temperature range of -30°C to 70°C. Both are offered in a BGA-64 package or as bare die. Engineering samples are available with production scheduled in the third quarter of the year.
